The Utah AI Political Ads Law (SB 131) requires political ads in Utah that contain synthetic media to clearly disclose that fact. Synthetic media means audio, image, or video content substantially produced by generative AI. Signed March 13, 2024, the law has been in effect since May 1, 2024.
What the Utah AI Political Ads Law Requires
The rule applies to communications paid for by candidate campaigns, PACs, political parties, or issue committees that are intended to influence voting. Disclosures are tailored to the medium, and audio ads must say “Contains content generated by AI” at the beginning and end.
Penalties and Enforcement
Violations carry a 1,000 dollar penalty per violation, and the law includes a private right of action. That combination means both regulators and private parties can pursue undisclosed synthetic media in Utah political advertising, so campaign teams should treat the disclosure as a standard production step.
