The Maine AI Chatbot Disclosure Law (LD 1727, Public Law c. 294) prohibits businesses from using chatbots or other software that simulates human conversation in commercial transactions with consumers in a way that could mislead a reasonable person into believing they are talking with a human. The exception is clear and conspicuous notice that the consumer is not engaging with a human being. The law has been in effect since September 2025, after being signed June 12, 2025.
How the Maine AI Chatbot Disclosure Law Is Enforced
Violations are unfair trade practices under the Maine Unfair Trade Practices Act, enforceable by the Attorney General. Civil penalties run up to $1,000 per violation, and per-violation exposure adds up quickly for high-volume chatbot deployments.
What Businesses Should Do
Any company using customer service or sales chatbots with Maine customers should add an upfront AI disclosure. Placing the notice at the start of every conversation is the cleanest way to satisfy the statute.
