Google started automatically upgrading Search campaigns to AI Max on September 1, and the upgrade window runs the whole month. If your account still uses campaign-level broad match or the older automatically created assets setting, the AI Max upgrade is coming to you whether or not you ask for it, and there is no path back to the legacy setting once it lands. Two other stories arrived alongside it: Anthropic shipped a new flagship model and cut the price of repeated context by 75 percent, and Google confirmed a bug that has been quietly unlinking Local Services Ads accounts from their Google Business Profiles.
Here is what actually happened, what is verified against the primary record, and what each item means for a small business that pays for search traffic.
AI Max Is Absorbing Broad Match and Automatically Created Assets
Google is migrating Search campaigns that use campaign-level broad match or standalone automatically created assets into AI Max between September 1 and September 30. There is no opt-in step, no staged approval, and no option to keep the legacy settings after the window closes.
Google published the timeline on its Ads Developers blog on August 12, and it has been closing the door in stages ever since. As of August 3, new campaign-level broad match settings and legacy automatically created assets can no longer be created anywhere, not in the Google Ads interface, not in Ads Editor, and not through the API. Dynamic Search Ads get a longer runway and migrate February 1 through 28, 2027.
The detail worth your attention is what each cohort inherits. PPC Land read Google’s August 5 advertiser notice directly and reported the defaults: campaigns that used automatically created assets come out the other side with both search term matching and text customization switched on, while campaigns that used campaign-level broad match get search term matching only. Final URL expansion is not enabled by default for either group.
Read that again if you ran automatically created assets. Search term matching is a genuine expansion of where your ads can appear, and the legacy feature never included it. The broad match crowd is largely getting its existing behavior relocated. The assets crowd is getting something new turned on by default.
The practical move is to audit before the AI Max migration reaches your account rather than after. Brand inclusions and exclusions carry over automatically, so confirm yours are actually correct rather than assuming they are. Then watch the search terms report closely for the first two weeks after your campaigns flip to AI Max, because that report is where a widened match surface shows up first.
The AI Max Keyword Prioritization Change That Went In Quietly
Alongside the migration, Google updated its AI Max help documentation to spell out a behavior change that is easy to miss. Broad keywords are no longer treated as exact match keywords when the system decides which keyword wins.
Google’s wording is direct: “When disabling the broad match campaign setting or moving to AI Max, broad keywords are not treated as exact match keywords in prioritization.” Search Engine Roundtable flagged the documentation edit on September 1.
Google’s own remedy is to add copies of your exact match keywords into the new campaign. That works, but it costs you something: the copies start clean, without the historical performance data attached to the originals. If you built your account around a broad keyword reliably beating a looser one in the auction, that arrangement stops on its own, silently, the day your campaign moves to AI Max.
Anthropic Ships Claude Fable 5.1 and Makes Repeat Context Much Cheaper
Anthropic released Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1 on September 1. Base pricing did not move, holding at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, but cache reads dropped by 75 percent to $0.25 per million.
The two models are closer than the naming suggests. Anthropic’s announcement puts it plainly: “Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1 are the same model, but with different levels of safeguards.” Fable 5.1 is generally available across Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Claude Code, Claude Enterprise and Claude.ai. Mythos 5.1 is restricted to trusted access programs for cybersecurity and life sciences work. The company’s platform release notes add that both ship with a one million token context window by default and always-on adaptive thinking.
Anthropic estimates the cache change works out to roughly 25 percent savings against Fable 5 for typical workloads, and up to about 45 percent for heavily agentic tasks. That claim did not go unchallenged. The Decoder published an update citing measurements from Artificial Analysis showing that Fable 5.1 running at maximum effort actually costs around 20 percent more per task than Fable 5 did, because the newer model works longer on the same problem.
That gap is the useful lesson for any business buying AI by consumption. Cheaper per token is not the same thing as cheaper per task. If a vendor quotes you a savings percentage off a model price cut, the number that matters is what a full job costs you end to end, measured on your own work, not on a benchmark.
If you use AI through a flat monthly subscription, none of this touches your bill. If you pay a developer or an agency who bills you for token usage, or you use a tool that resells this model, it is a fair question to ask whether the cache reduction is being passed along to you.
Google Confirms Local Services Ads Are Unlinking From Business Profiles
Google Ads Liaison Ginny Marvin confirmed on September 1 that a bug is unlinking Local Services Ads accounts from their associated Google Business Profiles. Her statement was short: “We identified a bug and are actively working to resolve it.” She also said the problem is “unrelated to the migration” of Local Services Ads into Google Ads.
Advertisers started reporting it over the preceding weekend. In a Local Search Forum thread, one operator described getting a notice that their ad had stopped running because of “a data mismatch between your linked Google Business Profile and your Local Services Ads,” with the business verification status flipping from Complete back to In Progress while the correct profile was still displayed. A second advertiser reported the identical failure and said Google support, on a callback, described it as a widespread issue. Search Engine Roundtable collected the reports and Marvin’s response the same day.
This one is worth acting on today rather than waiting for a fix. An unlinked profile means the ad stops serving, and lead-generation ads that quietly stop serving are the kind of failure a busy owner notices a week late, on the invoice, after the phone has already gone quiet. Open your Local Services Ads account, confirm the Google Business Profile link and the verification status, and screenshot both before you contact support, because a support escalation goes faster when you can show the before state.
Home services, legal, real estate and the other verticals that live on Local Services Ads are exactly the businesses least able to absorb a silent week of no leads. Check it, do not assume it.
Frequently Asked Questions About the AI Max Upgrade
Can I stop my campaigns from being upgraded to AI Max?
Not permanently. You can avoid the automatic path by turning off the legacy features yourself or by enabling AI Max manually on your own schedule, which gives you control over the timing and the settings. What you cannot do is keep campaign-level broad match or legacy automatically created assets running past the migration window.
What actually changes when a campaign moves to AI Max?
Campaigns that used automatically created assets arrive with both search term matching and text customization enabled. Campaigns that used campaign-level broad match arrive with search term matching only. Final URL expansion stays off by default for both groups, and it only functions if text customization is also on.
Do my brand exclusions carry over?
Google says existing brand inclusions and exclusions transfer automatically during the migration. That is a reason to review them now rather than trust them blindly, because an exclusion list that was slightly wrong before will be exactly as wrong afterward, applied to a wider set of queries than it was written for.
Is the new Claude model cheaper for a small business?
It depends entirely on how you buy it. Subscription pricing is unaffected. Consumption pricing benefits from the cache read reduction, but independent measurement found that maximum-effort runs cost more per completed task than the previous model, so test it against your own workload before assuming a saving.
What should I do if my Local Services Ads stopped running?
Check whether your Google Business Profile is still linked and whether verification has reverted to In Progress. Both are symptoms of the confirmed bug. Document what you see, then contact Google support and reference the acknowledged unlinking issue rather than opening a generic ad disapproval ticket.
Stay Ahead of the Next Platform Change
Automated upgrades like AI Max reward the accounts that were already organized and punish the ones running on defaults nobody has reviewed in a year, which is exactly the problem our SEO and analytics work exists to solve.
